ack in February, we concluded our annual philanthropy week called “APHIASCO” where we raise money for cardiac care and research for the Alpha Phi Foundation. In one week, we raised over $18,100, 75% percent of which is donated directly to the Rockingham Memorial Hospital of Harrisonburg, VA.
We have created a strong bond between the sisters of Alpha Phi and the employees of RMH. Through their support, we were able to hold a successful series of events:
Proceeds nights
Alpha Phi networked with local Harrisonburg restaurants such as Chili's Bar & Grill, Great Wraps, Salad Creations, and Doña Rosa to raise additional money for its philanthropy. JMU students, faculty, and administration supported our efforts and enjoyed great food along the way!
King of hearts male auction
This male auction is one of our most entertaining events we hold throughout the week. Men from various Greek and non-Greek organizations on campus were selected to perform talents such as singing, playing an instrument, dancing, or even poetry reading. Audience members are able to bid on the participants, and the highest bidder wins a date with her "purchase".
commons days
Standing in the heart of JMU's campus, sisters held “penny wars” between the Greek organizations on the campus commons and sold “JMU is For Lovers” t-shirts to fundraise even more.
Move Your Phi’t 5K
With strong attendance from JMU students and staff as well as RMH employees, participants ran or walked a 3.2 mile course on campus while sisters cheered for them along the way. With the sun shining and sisters smiling, this was a great day to get fresh air and some exercise!
Red Dress Gala
This particular event is special to sisters, alumnae, RMH supporters, and families. Raising over $12,000 in this event, this is a fancy evening dedicated to all of the hard work sisters have done throughout the week and RMH's constant support. Local businesses and organizations from sisters' hometowns donated baskets to our silent auction. What a great way to end such a "heart-warming" week!
Through these philanthropic efforts, we are ranked as one of the top three donating chapters out of the Southeast Region to the Alpha Phi Foundation. In 2010, our chapter was awarded the Martha Mast Award for Outstanding Philanthropy and was recognized by Alpha Phi Internationals.
Upcoming Events
Monday, February 20, 2012 is the kick off of APHIASCO with the "King of Hearts Male Auction" in the Grafton Stovall Theatre at 7 pm.
